It attracts millions of tourists from the around the world each year. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word “Hollywood” is often used as a metonym of American cinema, and is often interchangeably used to refer to the greater Los Angeles area in general. The nicknames StarStruck Town and Tinseltown refer to Hollywood and its movie industry.

A Ranch named “Hollywood”

When Spanish explorers first entered the area now known as Hollywood, Native Americans were living in the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains. Before long, the Indians had been moved to missions and the land which Hollywood now occupies was divided in two by the Spanish Government. Acreage to the west became part of Rancho La Brea and settlements to the East became Rancho Los Feliz.

By the 1870s an agricultural community flourished in the area and crops ranging from hay and grain to subtropical bananas and pineapples were thriving. During the 1880s, the Ranchos were sub-divided. In 1886, H. H. Wilcox bought an area of Rancho La Brea that his wife then christened “Hollywood.” Within a few years, Wilcox had devised a grid plan for his new community, paved Prospect Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard) for his main street and was selling large residential lots to wealthy Midwesterners looking to build homes so they could “winter in California.”

Prospect Avenue soon became a prestigious residential street populated with large Queen Anne, Victorian, and Mission Revival houses. Mrs. Daeida Wilcox raised funds to build churches, schools and a libraryand Hollywood quickly became a complete and prosperous community. The community incorporated in 1903, but its independence was short-lived, as the lack of water forced annexation in 1910 to the city of Los Angeles, which had a surplus supply of water.

In 1911, the Nestor Company opened Hollywood’s first film studio in an old tavern on the corner of Sunset and Gower. Not long thereafter Cecil B. DeMille and D. W. Griffith began making movies in the areadrawn to the community for its open space and moderate climate.

New Industry

The needs of this thriving new industry created radical changes in the community causing a clash between older and newer residents. Acres of agricultural land south of what-is-now Hollywood Boulevard were subdivided and developed as housing for the enormous numbers of workers that movie-making required.

High-rise commercial buildings began to spring up along Hollywood Boulevard three competing real-estate interests caused concentrations of development at Highland, Cahuenga, and at Vine. It wasn’t long before nearly all the homes along the Boulevard were replaced by commercial buildings linking the three corners.

Banks, restaurants, clubs and movie palaces sprang up, catering to the demands of the burgeoning film industry during the 1920s and 1930s. The architectural styles of the buildings were representative of those most popular between the World Wars. Banks were typically designed in the more formal Beaux Arts styles, but other buildings in the community took on more playful personalities.

The ornamental Spanish Colonial Revival style reflected Hollywood’s self-conscious extravagance while the new Art Deco and Moderne styles fit the community’s aspirations for glamour and sophistication.

Commercial and Entertainment Area

Hollywood has been anything but static, however, and after a few decades as the capital of film glamour, the neighborhood changed again. Although much of the studio work remained in Hollywood, many stars moved to Beverly Hills, and the elegant shops and restaurants left with them.

In the 1960s, music recording studios and offices began moving to Hollywood and offshoot of the nightclubs further west on Sunset Boulevard. Other businesses, however, continued to migrate to different parts of the city. Hollywood today is a diverse, vital, and active community striving to preserve the elegant buildings from its past. Much of the movie industry remains in the area, although the neighborhood’s outward appearance has changed.

In 1985, the Hollywood Boulevard commercial and entertainment district was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places protecting the neighborhood’s important buildings and seeing to it that the significance of Hollywood’s past would always be a part of its future.

The band comprised of his brothers who were all older than him, and was run by his father Joseph. The group did very well and the star of the band was undoubtedly little Michael at eleven years of age.

He started singing solo two years later and pioneered the entry of African Americans in to the world of pop and ensured a vast following that gave him instant success. His fans numbered in the millions even though he was just in his teens.

Record breaking

Three of his album which broke records are “Bad”, “Thriller” and “Off the Wall”, sold millions of copies worldwide and gave him an entry into the record books. Guinness World of Records listed him as the entertainer who was the most successful. During his career he got 13 Grammys with singles that remained on the music charts for a very long time.

Changing appearance

Michael Jackson’s fame and fortune caused him to be the cynosure of billions of people and also led to his being hounded by the paparazzi and his exploitation by the press and media. He was sensitive about is appearance and constantly distressed by his nose which had caused him to be teased about it as a teen, and led him to opt for surgery on it. This surgery was the first of many that he underwent throughout his life.

He had changed his appearance to appear as a white man even though his being a black American had in no way stopped him being the idol of many millions of people, not limited to the United States. His reasons for doing this are a mystery and it is said that if he had kept the looks he was born with he would have gone much further as an entertainer. In spite of the cosmetic changes that he did make to himself, Michael Jackson continued to be considered the greatest entertainer in the world.

Dark period of his life

His life took an unfortunate turn when he was accused of child molestation. He was hounded by the media who continued to dwell on the topic even though his innocence was proved. His image in public eyes was destroyed and Michael Jackson legion of devoted fans, could not prevent this damage to his reputation.

His dancing skills have led to many entertainers being inspired to imitate him and his added singing skills made him unique. Michael was of a philanthropic bent of mind and his charities have helped millions worldwide.

His death is a huge loss to the entertainment industry and the world at large. He will always be remembered and will be in the hearts of his fans, forever.

His best works

His best works included “For you and for Me”, “There Are People Dying”, “Make It A Better Place”. His works “If You Care Enough”, “For The Living”, “Heal the World”, “And The Entire Human Race”, “Make A Better Place” were equally popular.

Michael Jackson was called King of Pop and will always be in our hearts. May God rest his soul.

Disney was the best thing that happened to show business in the last century. Walt’s family moved to Marceline, Missouri after his birth where he was brought up in a farm. Drawing caught his imagination ever since he was seven years old and he sold his sketches to his neighbors. Family moved to Chicago again where Disney concentrated both on Drawing and Photography in his high school. He also attended the Academy of Fine Arts at night.

Walt was also attracted to the beauty of nature as he grew up and he began to love and appreciate it. Though his father was particularly opposed to his plans her mother and elder brother Roy encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Disney even tried to get into military service but was rejected because he was only 16 years of age and thus was underage to join military. But he joined Red Cross where he was sent to France and he spent a year there driving ambulance.

After returning from France he pursued a career in commercial art and even started a small company called Laugh-O-Grams which went bankrupt soon. This prompted him to go to Hollywood. It is said he had only one suitcase and $20 with him when he went to Hollywood. His elder brother Roy was living in California, he pooled in $250 and they borrowed another $500 and constructed a camera stand. It didn’t take a long wait before they received an order from New York to make the first Alice Comedy and they started producing cartoons in the rear of a real estate office in Hollywood. After successfully making Alice Comedies Walt became a famous figure in Hollywood.

Walt married one of his employees Lillian Bounds and they had two daughters. The cartoon film Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 and his talents were exposed to the world in a silent cartoon called Plane Crazy. The year coincided with the introduction of sound in movies just before the release of the cartoon. The cartoon character Mickey made its screen debut in Steamboat Willie which was the world’s first fully synchronized sound cartoon. The cartoon premiered at the Colony Theater in New York on Nov. 18, 1928.

Walt was never content with his work and his quest for excellence made him introduce Technicolor in cartoons in 1932. He used multiplane camera technique in 1937. On December 21, 1937 Walt released the first full length animated musical film called “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” made at a whopping cost of $1.5 million. The animated film is still regarded as one of the rare feats of the motion picture industry.

Walt had a studio in Burbank constructed which was ready in 1940 and the employee count went up to 1,000 which comprised of artists, animators, story men and technicians. Disney used combine live action with the cartoon medium in 1945 in the musical “The Three Caballeros”. Walt went to make many award winning cartoon films such as “True Life Adventure” series, “The Living Desert” and many more. Disneyland was launched in 1955 with a capital of $17 million and the investment increased by 10 fold within a few years. Walt turned to social causes in 1965 and directed a film on Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow to improve the quality of urban life in America. But Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966 leaving many achievements and unfulfilled dreams behind him.

Walt Disney envisioned and had directed to purchase about forty three square miles of land, double the size of Manhattan Island in central Florida. It took about fifty months to complete the planning and construction of the Walt Disney World which was eventually opened to public on October 1, 1971. Walk Disney was truly a pioneer and visionary of many modern days’ technologies. No wonder why he has received more than 950 honors and 48 Oscar awards and 7 Emmy awards. Truly this man stands out for his outstanding contribution to the improvement of art of cartoon making.

Batik, according to Wikipedia comes from the Javanese word Amba (writing) and titik (also means “dot” in the Indonesian language). In addition there is also interpreted as writing or dotting. Indeed, dot is the dominant design in batik. At the National Museum we can see detail on drawing batik fabric on stone sculptures from the eighth century (eg sculpture sculptures from the temples of Prambanan) as well as in the sculptures from the 13th century (Singosari) and century 14 (Majapahit). Despite this first writing about batik in Java comes from recording the palace in central Java in the 16th century (Aspects of Indonesian Culture).

Basic techniques of batik (dye resistance pattern) according to the info comes from Egypt around 1500 years ago. At the National Museum of China there are also jars are made by trying to practice this batik techniques on ceramics. But the experiment seems to be more successful on the fabric in Java. From the name alone is unclear who raised the name of the place of origin of batik itself.

With the development of the cloth trade in Java, then go fabric from India in the years around 1800 and from Europe in the years around 1815. Because using higher quality fabrics, the increasingly rapid development of Java, batik and more famous.

Gittinger Mattiebelle researching the textile industry in Indonesia in his writings on the Arts of Asia (September-October 1980) states that use the basic technique that uses wax batik may have originated from China and India, but all the tools and the process of making batik is specific pembatikannya Java. Batik Canting is a tool of writing invented by the Javanese and shows a high versatility of our ancestors.

In fact, according Gittinger Dutch in the 17th century began to trade in batik and in the 19th century began producing batik textile factory which later to be trade to West Africa.

Unfortunately the results of high artistic value, according to experts, lack of government attention. Even a flatter Malaysian government on the development of awareness of batik Malaysia, citing the daily Jakarta Post that discussed the development of Indonesian batik comparison with the actual use of Malaysian workers from Indonesia. Lack of government attention on the development of batik was highlighted in 2005 due to patent it first Malaysian batik as it is written in the Republika daily . Indeed this patent matters according to the daily Kompas many do not know, and quite difficult to fight for the recognition of the cultural tradition of property rights. Malaysia attention on patents is higher, and their promotion of Malaysian batik is quite large, as seen on stamps of Malaysia.

Whereas batik actually contains a very high historical value. Parang Rusak batik for example, actually includes batik motifs used in sacred that only the court environment. Similarly, the color motif batik parang at home court can determine the users, whether from the Kraton of Solo or Jogja Kraton.

Besides bringing a symbolic meaning, observing the cultural richness of batik also showed uptake of Indonesia. National Museum we can see the difference between coastal batik influenced by Chinese culture, Islamic culture, as well as the influence of the Dutch occupation that was at that time also resulted in the Dutch batik (derived from the plant owned by the Dutch in Indonesia).
